Even though I console myself with ensuring that anything that can be done for my Mum is done I have always wondered whether any good could come out of the situation. I have therefore decided to take part in the Alzheimer's Society's London to Paris Cycle Ride to raise money for the continued good work of the Alzheimer's Sociey and to raise awareness of the issues surrounding the disease and the support needed by the elderly generally. Luckily my colleague, Lucy Beck, has agreed to join me in this adventure!
I have learnt from a difficult family situation with my Mum that life is for living. We need to have a balance in our lives. We also need to enjoy life and take the opportunities that come our way as you never know what life has in store for us.
My mother, Joyce, has suffered from Alzheimer's Disease, which is a form of Dementia, for over 10 years and has been in residential care for 7 of those years. Alzheimer's is a horrid disease for the person as well as those who are closest to them and it raises a variety of issues. Even though I still have my Mum, she is not the person I have known for all of my life. An energetic, happy and hard working lady who ran her own hairdressing business in Bournemouth for many years is now someone who cannot do anything for herself and does not know who I am.
So whilst Lucy and I take the pain of preparing for and undertaking the 320 mile cycle ride over 4 consecutive days, we have created FOUR opportunities for you to have some fun and support our fundraising at the same time. Even if you cannot attend one of our events we would be very grateful for your support as, of course, will be the millions throughout the World who suffer from this dreadful disease.
Key West, Bournemouth Pier
The Three Tuns, Bransgore..
Main Hospitality Marquee, Bournemouth Seafront
Carlton Hotel, Bournemouth
We hope that you will be interested in the events that we have planned (full details on separate page). We do however appreciate that there are many people undertaking and organising events for charities and so in view of the current econmic climate, Lucy and I are very grateful for any support you can give us.
If you cannot attend the events please do consider sponsoring some prizes or making a donation of any size either by cheque direct to Fiona or Lucy at Coles Miller or via the Just Giving links below:
